It's a two for one: community cooking classes, pop-up dinners, tastings, and other food related programming, taught by local chefs, all geared at improving our local food system by increasing Kitchen Literacy across Syracuse and Onondaga County, which then creates cashflow for free cooking classes for Syracuse City School District (SCSD) teens.
Cooking is a life skill, increasing kitchen literacy empowers us to make informed choices about the food we purchase and prepare. There is a real desire for education based around its core tenets across the city of Syracuse.
We have tapped the community for local chefs, bakers, health care professionals, farmers, educators and parents to create classes and food based experiences.
We hope that in casting a wide net for contributors we have created, and will continue to create a diverse teaching crew, and an exciting variety of programming.
The themes are sustainability, seasonality, working with humble, inexpensive ingredients, community connections, empowerment, the foundations of what makes things taste good, and health.
The vibe is safe, welcoming, inclusive, playful, social, and educational!
From basic 101 skills, to serious kitchen geek stuff, we’ve got your interests covered with a wide variety of community led classes, educational chef’s tables, and tastings.
Doesn't that sound fun? And to reiterate...
Every Sunday and Tuesday Kitchen Literacy event you attend at Pearl's Teaching Kitchen at the Salt City Market helps fund free Monday cooking classes for Syracuse teens, in which they take home a meal for four which they have prepared with our instructors.
So it’s kind of a win for you, and a win for our community. I don’t know about you, but I think we could all do with a win, last few years have been weird (to put it exceptionally mildly),
